PVDF membrane, polyvinylidene fluoride, is a solid support commonly used in Western blotting. PVDF membrane is hydrophobic, and the pore size of the membrane is large or small. As the pore size of the membrane continues to decrease, the membrane binds to low-molecular-weight proteins more firmly. Use 0.45um membrane for protein larger than 20000, and 0.2um membrane for protein smaller than 20000. PVDF membrane needs to be pre-treated when it is used. The purpose of treatment with methanol is to activate the positively charged groups on the membrane to make it easier to bind to negatively charged proteins. PVDF membrane has high mechanical strength and is an ideal solid support material in the imprinting method.
